On the other side of the world in Kenya, seven of us got
off the plane and were bundled into a minivan with all
our luggage as well. It was okay for the first hour on
the lovely road going out of Nairobi but, as we reached
the Province where the Maasai tribe were, we got off the
main road and onto some dust roads, dust became the
operative word. I have never seen dust like it and don't
know how the driver could see - it was crazy. Speed was
restricted because there were potholes of the size that
would swallow baby elephants.
We drove for about two hours in the Great Rift Valley and,
every now and again, we'd see a flock of ostriches running
along and then a little bit later see a whole herd of
gazelle bouncing around and eating and, in the distance,
we saw zebras.
Eventually we reached our destination, which was a hole
in the ground. We asked the driver why we had stopped
and he told us the hole was what we had come to see.
There were about 30 local Maasai people around the hole
in the ground; we got out of the minibus and were told by
the Bishop of this tiny little community that the hole in
the ground was going to be a church as soon as they had
raised enough money to build a structure. They excitedly
told us they were going to have chairs and people coming
